The newly inaugurated Amravati Airport, also known as Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Airport, is set to play a transformative role in enhancing connectivity and commerce across the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. Designed to meet the growing demands of this rapidly developing area, the airport marks a significant step in regional infrastructure development.

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION ENTITIES

  • Initial Construction (1992): The original airstrip at Amravati Airport was constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD) of Maharashtra in 1992.

  • Subsequent Management:

    • In 1997, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) took over the management of the airstrip.

    • Later, it was transferred to the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), which has been instrumental in the airport's modernization efforts.

  • Development Lease (2014): The Government of Maharashtra leased the airport to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for 60 years at a nominal monthly rent. AAI was tasked with developing the airport, including extending the runway and constructing new facilities.

CONSTRUCTION TIMELINE

  • Land Acquisition: The process began in the early 2010s and was completed by 2013.

  • Foundation Stone Laid: Due to funding issues, significant development work commenced in 2019 when the foundation stone was laid.

  • Completion and Operationalization:

    • By August 2023, major infrastructural components like the runway extension, apron, and taxiway were completed.

    • The airport received its aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in March 2025.

    • The airport commenced commercial operations on April 16, 2025, with Alliance Air operating the inaugural flight.

AND INFRASTRUCTURE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Runway and Airside Facilities: The airport features a runway measuring 1,850 meters in length and 45 meters in width, designated as 08/26. This runway is capable of accommodating ATR-72 type aircraft, facilitating regional connectivity under the UDAN-RCS scheme. The airside infrastructure includes a 163-meter by 18-meter taxiway and a 100-meter by 110-meter apron, supporting efficient aircraft movement and parking.

  • Terminal Building: Spanning 2,600 square meters, the terminal building is designed to handle 100 passengers during peak hours. The structure incorporates modern amenities to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency.

  • Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower: A 26-meter-high ATC tower has been constructed to oversee and manage air traffic operations, ensuring safety and coordination within the airport's airspace.

  • Sustainability Features: Emphasizing environmental responsibility, the airport integrates a rainwater harvesting system, contributing to sustainable water management practices.

  • Night Landing Facilities: Plans are underway to equip the airport with night landing capabilities, pending necessary approvals and funding.

STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE

Located approximately 15 kilometers south of Amravati city in Belora, the airport enhances accessibility for both passengers and cargo. Its proximity to agricultural hubs is particularly beneficial for the swift transportation of perishable goods, potentially opening new markets for local farmers. Additionally, improved connectivity is anticipated to attract businesses, boost tourism, and provide residents with more travel options.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

Looking ahead, the airport is poised to host India's largest Flying Training Organization (FTO), established by Air India. This facility aims to train 180 commercial pilots annually, further cementing Amravati's role in the nation's aviation sector.
